On Fridays at the drop-in youth tutoring program, we have the kids journal for 20 minutes.  The youth services supervisor advised us to find some bit of work that we need to do or list to make during the time, so we would be modeling the writing for the kids.  I usually use the time to write stories and poetry or whatever's on my mind, and I turned one of my stories into a song.  My first song ever!  Whoa.

The story of the night

D C Bm D
I went to my alone-place in search of the quiet.

D G Em G
I found myself, instead, face to face with the night.
C D
Glistening star-drops, they wetted her cheeks
Bm7 Em C D
With the glow of their joy forming murmuring creeks

C D A
That eked out a path through my lonely heart’s blight.

C D
The dark night met my soul
G D
And it saved me from the day
G D
In the night, I am made whole
C D
And she showed me how to pray.

G C Bm D
A finger I traced cross the deep, winding trail,

While the night, she regaled me with a wind-whispered tale

C D
Of the time the sky-maker, he left open the door
Bm7 Em C D
To the sun’s bedroom, and off of the floor
C D A
The shadow-beast leaped, with a glorious wail

The dark night met my soul
And it saved me from the day
Day exacts its heart-coin toll
The night gives heart away.

The shadow-beast’s face, made of all that we fear,
Was the one thing that could make the sun’s darkness appear
Beholding that face, the sun, he rolled out and out,
Clear cross the sky to escape his self-doubt.
To the sun, the beast’s face was a mirror.

C D
The dark night met my soul
G D
And it saved me from the day
G D
Day fears its journey’s goal
C D
Night guides me on my way

G C Bm D
The shadow-beast thought it a marvelous game,
D G Em G
It saw the sun running, and along the beast came.
C D
The night simply heaved a stillness-sigh,
Bm7 Em C D
Then giggled and made the stars shimmer on high.
C D A
When fear and panic left, she alone remained.

The dark night met my soul
And it saved me from the day
Her courage made me whole
And counseled me to stay.

The moon began to dance a spritely reel.
For in the stillness, she could feel
The heartbeat of the sleeping earth,
And millions of heartbeats applauding its worth,
Like children’s feet to the drummer’s steel.

The dark night met my soul
And it saved me from the day
In the night, I am made whole
And she shows me how to play.

G C Bm D
In the stillness’ silent song,
D G Em G
I began to dance along,
C D
And together we leapt, we swayed, and we spun,
Bm7 Em C D
Until the return of the beast and the sun.
